Smitty sled, Waxing

Hi everyone , I’m itching for the ice as most, would like to apply wax to my smitty sled skis, where can I purchase and is there a right or wrong way to apply, thanks for any advice

I just use big candles from dollar store and wax front to back

I also just waxed my skiis

not sure how effective it is but,,, the ants in the pants need to keep busy.

Wax will DEFINITELY improve the glide on your smitty but you need to do it properly. The air temperature, humidity, and age of the snow will all affect the type of wax that you apply. You can check out these videos or any others for tips on how to clean the base and apply the wax:

Cleaning the base and waxing are of the utmost concern to performance skiers but not to ice anglers. As waxes are temperature rated, you're likely best off buying a ski wax for the temperature ranges that you are most likely to fish or look for a universal glide wax. You could try Toko NF Hot Wax All-In-One -- 120 g for $19 at Sport Chek. You can also buy wax at Mountain Equipment Coop or any ski shop. You can just rub the wax in cold then buff it with a green kitchen scrubby although the standard practice is to melt it in with an iron, scrape it off with a plastic scraper, brush the base with a fine bristle brush, then buff with the scrubby. If you use an iron to melt in the wax, it is crucial not to get the iron too hot so that the wax smokes -- definitely not healthy for you or the ski base!

Waxing is not as complicated as it might seem and, if done correctly, will definitely improve glide. My hunch is, however, that most anglers couldn't be bothered.

Yup I get wax from the dollar store and rumb it in if there's any gouges I would heat the ski or bottom then melt wax in to the gouge I do it once every beginning of the season

Hi Dan, may I know what kind of wax you get from dollar store.

Ski wax that's appropriate for the weather conditions would probably be a good bet. Dry powder, packing snow etc. So much nicer if there's no resistance.

Update: just made a sled and got some wax at Sail. About $20. It's gliding wax for all conditions so sounds like it'll work OK.
