Hi Folks:
I heard that some of the year around occupants of Snake Island crossed the channel from the island to the mainland mid week.
I personally checked out the channel between the mainland and the island last weekend and I discovered where the channel was frozen over several days earlier - the entire channel was open water late last Saturday. Despite the extreme temperatures over the past week which would have been ideal for ice formation - I don't plan on joining the Polar Bear Club anything soon. I will be waiting for a few more cold days before venturing out on the ice in the Snake Island/Island Grove area.
I also checked to see if the ice hut operator in the Island Grove area was open and apparently they will be opening on January 4th. I suspect they are aware of the ice conditions in this area and I would suggest waiting for a few more days before testing Mother Nature.
One more comment - unless my memory fails me - I think the first week of January is probably one of the earliest starts to the hard water season in recent history. In fact, I recall being out on the open water in this area in early January more than one year in the past five years.
