I would really like a snow machine for getting to the cottage/ice fishing. Would love some feedback on reliable machines. I really don't care about anything beyond it starting when I ask it to. I also don't have the money to buy new. I really don't know what I'm doing so any advice on brands and model years to seek or avoid would be fantastic.

Any type of touring sled is great because they were never abused.the engines sec a lot less and last longer. Stay far away from any sport models they rev a lot high and people drive the he'll out of them and they are usually finished that's why they sell them. Just my two cents I have been a mechanic for the past 20 years and seen my share.

You can effectively eliminate the worries that go with purchasing a used machine by buying a Yamaha. From your description of intended use, I'd recommend a sled over an ATV. I really enjoy my Yamaha ATV but any of the Yamaha sleds should work well for you. There are many reasons why Yamahas are a tad rare in the "For Sale" ads. Good luck with your search.

Yup, what he said.
Look for a late 90's, early 2000 yamaha venture 500. Fan cooled and bullet proof sleds. You don't find them often, but they are great machines.
