A Guelph ice fisher has been charged after dropping his line where he wasn't supposed to.

At approximately 4 p.m. on Jan. 27, Wellington County OPP received reports that someone was ice fishing illegally on Guelph Lake. Officers went to the scene and found the man ice fishing. This was despite a Grand River Conservation Authority prohibition against ice fishing on that lake.

A 41-year-old Guelph man has been charged with trespassing and was issued a provincial offence notice.

The Wellington County OPP is reminding people to pay attention to closures and warnings from the GRCA and other authorities.

"The GRCA website allows users to identify where activities are allowed and calling any park direct will get you the immediate status," a news release adds.

"Not following these cautions can leave you on 'thin ice.'"

Strictly a liability thing with GRCA, and believe me I get it, but I’ve been out there a few times this season and there was easily 14-16” of ice when I was out. IMO, GRCA doesn’t staff the park during the winter months, so they don’t want ppl in there, too concerned with losing the few pennies they’d make.

That really sucks!!! People need to know the spots they CAN fish. You might get away with fishing in an area you can't but it is not worth the risk!!
