I have a question, and this bothers me A LOT.
I get the idea with the family fishing weekend, introduce new people to fishing, give people an opportunity they might not otherwise have...blah blah blah.
How can anyone expect these people to follow the rules? SO many people that don't have a license don't even know there ARE any rules.
I've spoken to people who don't fish and they have no clue.
Brings me to the other point; our license is a complete joke. In order to be licensed at "something" should you not be at least writing a basic test?
PS: and sorry for hijacking, this is NOT directed at the original poster.
I know this has been flogged many times in the past. My apologies.

You sound like a government employee with your test idea.
The purpose of the free weekend is to introduce family members who don't normally fish to try it. Who knows, they may like it and grow up wanting to fish and enjoy fishing.
Same idea when the ski hill has a free ski day or ringuette has a free ringuette day. It's to introduce a sport to some people who may not be otherwise exposed to it.

Family fishin week/weekend actually promotes the knowledge that you do need a license to fish... License free fishing is the entire event, thus granting the awareness of the existence of fishing licenses/rules.
If i didn't think i needed a license to go fishing i would just go anytime.

Realistically, If someone is new enough to not know there are licenses and regulations, they likely don't know how to fish either. Or they are with someone that does fish regularly, in which case that person would be aware of the laws.

Agree. To get a driver's license you take a driving test, a boat license, a firearm license etc, all require a test.
But not fishing, it should be called something else like a fishing TAG/PERMIT but not a license.

I agree, but at the same time, I went ice fishing last year on kempenfelt bay and I saw a group of 3 people fishing, and they had over 20 whities on the ice. and that's just what I saw
I do agree with the "introduce people to a new sport" idea, but from a government point of view I think it is more like a porn site when they give you the free sample, but if you want the limitless content access you gotta pay to tease people into paying.
obviously the poster here genuinely wants to know his limits so he is not doing anything illegal and is within his limits, which is conservation limit of 25/person.
to be the devils advocate, it does open up a floodgate of people who just go out one day a year and slaughter fish who do not know the regulations and keep everything, even OOS species like muskie because "I thought it was a pike" or bass because "I "didn't" know (care)"
IMO, if people are going out without a license, they should be accompanied by a person that does. might limit the "I "didn't" knows"
maybe im too harsh of a critic, or grumpy because the parking fills up, but I think its just a porn site teaser trying to get you to give in to your temptations, rather than a legitimate "enjoy time with your family trying something new and have fun"

Ya i wish they had you read and sign a pamphlet with the basics and the local zone summary rules or something. You can legit go to CT buy a license and never know that there are limits or closed seasons, unless you happen to see and take a copy of the regs.
But people who are going to cheat and lie and going to do it anyways regardless of how the licensing is set up.

Licence or no licence it remains the same that some people keep over their limit.
There was a time when no one needed a licence. Did that make everyone keep over their limit? NOPE.
Now we have licences. Does that make every licensed anglers keep only their limit? NOPE.
A licence free weekend does not make any more of a problem for people who break the law. Do you think folks keeping more than their limit really care if it's a licence free weekend. If they break the law on purpose I highly doubt they ever fish with a valid licence.

What did the CO's say when you called them about the poaching of 20 whites on the ice?
