new outboard

so it is that time of year ia m looking to buy a new outboard motor
what is the best bang for the buck
i want a 9-9.9-9.5 hp for small back lakes and some portaging. is a 2 stoke better.or 4 stroke. i know the 4 stroke is heavier but i have an old 9.5 sport twin from 67 and she is starting to go down. i have heard 4 stroke are a pain but what of the new 2 strokes
any info will be deeply appreciated

Seriously, 4 strokes are a pain? Maybe in the 2 stroke world, no more mixing gas, no stink following you around unless you ate a crate of beans and sauerkraut. I had an 84 Honda 7.5 and from there never looked back at any of the 2 stroke jokes.

If you plan on doing a lot of portaging, a 9.9 is kinda big and heavy in my opinion.

i was up at grassy lake last june and a guy showed up with four stroke. and cursed til the sun set. he said he had it since the previous year and nothing but trouble. i also met a guy from bear lake there and said he had one for about a month and took it back cause they are a b#### to start. this is their opnion not mine. i have no opinion but love to hear the pros and cons thanks for your input

yes a 9.9 is heavey this i know from carrying a 9 and half sport twin for the last 30+ years lol

For those that have "difficulty" starting, you have to wonder how much fall maintenance was conducted. You can encounter a lot of people who neglect to do things and then groan and moan about bad products when it's their own fault. In the end, it's your Peso and you have to live with it.

I would go with a 9.9hp and it has to e a 2stroke. A little lighter and quicker throttle response. But that just my opinion.

I had a 40 year old 85hp merc that ran great when I sold it. It had a lot of hours on it and never left me stranded on the lake.
No idea what they are like now though.

I own a Yamaha outboard has been dependable for me for the last ten or so years. I've noticed some of the fishing lodges up north run Yamaha outboards they want something dependable. Let us know what you choose.

I used to have a 4 stroke Yamaha kicker and lying it down was not recommended. That could be a problem if you're "packing" it into back lakes unless some of the newer models have changed.

My brother and I picked up a 9.8hp four stroke Tohatsu 2 years ago for our 14ft tinny and love it. Great on fuel and trolls dead slow for the lake trout. No issues traveling with it on it's side on a 6 1/2 hour drive, you just have to make sure you have the right side up. made by the same company that makes the smaller Mercs.
