I know how much everyone hates the mention of the word Atlantic Salmon..

But I saw this article in the Star and thought it was interesting and a great read..

The story of how Samuel Wilmot tried to save Lake Ontario's Atlantic Salmon

https://www.thestar.com/yourtoronto/once-up...s-basement.html

Ultimately he failed, as the last wild Atlantic salmon was caught in 1898.

Anytime I visit an area for fishing etc. I always read the plaques and history of the area and river or lake I am fishing... I find it interesting and it's great too see remnants of what was once there, old foundations from mills on rivers, old dam abutments, old buildings and such..

Always interesting..

Not at all. a great read of some very interesting history.

Imagine that, over 100 years ago, and stream/river degradation and overfishing was already happening!

Fished Wilmot many times when I was a youngster as well as the Campbell River in BC, home river to another great fly fisherman Roderick Haig Brown

Two legends I admire a great deal

Very interesting read! Amazing that 150 years ago one man decided that he was going to save the salmon and unknowingly paved the way for modern hatchery! That's how it happens, I guess, like the #### slogan.... Just do it!
Good on him and on us that people like that cared and still care!

I am new to this, so why does everyone hate those two words?

cheers and thx for the post!

Sorry that word is blocked, but I guess we should unblock it, since it also just means "cat" or a "willow" type plant that blooms in early spring..

Anyway........ Atlantic Salmon --- very sensitive topic these days, since the Ontario Government, MNR and private organizations have spent millions of $$$ as well as time and resources trying to restore this fish in Lake Ontario.

Many would argue, why not use that money and resources to help fish that are of greater angling value, in terms of catch-able fish for the general public vs cost & resources invested..

ie. Like Steelhead and Chinook / Coho salmon

Of course I have no bias, since I am an avid steelheader..

So no comments from me.. Other than -- any work done to rehabilitate our rivers and maintain the fisheries is good work in my books......
