Blame the natives on the decline of the walleye as usual. IT IS OUR RIGHT to fish by our traditional means and us taking 1 or 2 fish by spear for eating is not driving your fish to extinction. You should check how many walleye sportfishers are taking with their big expensive boats and electronics. Like wiium said if we are to blame then there would be no walleye today as we have been fishing this way for 1000's of years! I want my children and my childrens children to fish by our traditional methods and preserve our culture. The only thing going extinct here is the native way of life.

The main topic of this thread is taking fish in sanctuaries. It shouldn't be allowed by anyone. Period.

That's great to hear Warhammer just don't show them in the sanctuaries.

It would seem that you have never witnessed what they do at the port. Its been going on for years and the walleye fishing has only gotten better. Please do not blame the natives for lack of fishing prowess.

This is a very touchy subject and I have mutual opinions on both sides of the fence so to go into depth on this subject would be futile. It would simply cause nothing more then a ###### swinging contest to put it bluntly. I will state for the record that as a Caucasian of Scottish/Maltese decent I truly feel that the natives caught a bad deal and were basically squeezed off thier own land.however this is life and a little thing called exponential growth. Nothing we can do about it folks.
I've been "squeezed off" alot of fishing spots by new anglers in places I've fished for years and never saw a soul. It's just the way it is when you live in the best country on earth..... Peeps are going to want to join. The point is, as fisherman we pride ourselves on being able to interpret , understand and apply a PATTERN.
Do you guys not see the pattern developing here?
STAY OUT OF THE SANCTUARIES!!
Sorry for yelling.......
Seriously though.... Go practice your way of life. All the power to ya
Just not within government protected water

Ok, this is getting a tad testy.no need to call someone a BS'r

Again the gist of this intial concern was fishing in sanctuaries...

I like a debate as much as the next guy, but it should be done without personal attacks or deameaning someone.no?

That is part of the posting rules I believe.

You 2 can PM each other to settle your diffs.

I will put my last 30 cents in here.

A santuary is just that.a sanctuary..

and no one.......including the Pope should fish in such. otherwise what's the point?

over and out

Saw this posted on another site...

From http://www.simcoe.com/sports/article/1350505

MIDLAND – Midland’s Tyson James Pamajewon speared this 159-pound sturgeon while fishing for pickerel on May 4 at Port Severn.
Pamajewon spotted the fish, which measured six feet nine inches long, moving in some rapids. A thrust of his spear marked the start of a 20-minute battle before he was finally able to wrestle the sturgeon ashore.
Pamajewon, seen here with daughter Daanis and his massive catch, said the meat will be shared with his family and other members of his home community of Shawanaga First Nation.
He added this was easily the largest fish he has ever caught, and the biggest sturgeon he’s ever heard of being landed with a spear. However, it turns out the record is held by a Wisconsin man who speared a 212-pound sturgeon in 2010 in Lake Winnebago.

I'd have to double check but lake sturgeon number in that area are threatened. I know for a fact the fishing season is closed all year around.

I know bad things have happened in the past to the natives, but when can we sweep that aside and start working together today so things can be better for the future.

I have stayed out of this thread since as the admin, I must remain somewhat neutral and allow discussions to go on freely to allow everyone to state their views and opinions. Please do not verbally attack specific members in the open forum. I do understand this is a touchy subject and emotions can run high.

My option on this is as follows:
I do not support fishing in a closed sanctuary. Years of funded research by the MNR, Universities, and private organizations have determined these sanctuary areas are sensitive to fishing pressure. These laws have been put in place to protect the fishery and sustain it for future generations.

At the same time, laws are in place which allow natives to continue their way of life and preserve their cultural heritage. They are not breaking any laws by fishing with spears.

The real problem seems to lie with the Government, and those who allow fishing in provincially protected sanctuaries.

Peace out..
Jerry

Talk about sickening to see a Georgian bay sturgeon on the endangered species list being speared in port Severn sanctuary. How manly your right to do this or not this is a crying shame ther is no sport to this and definitely no need to take this fish for food to feed your family especially with all the money the government dishes out to the native population. That aside use your common sense man leave fish alone to spawn on the spawning beds!!!
