Salmon Poachers Charged!

Fishing blitz nets dozens of charges in Port Hope, Cobourg

More than three dozen charges were laid against anglers in Northumberland County during a three-day enforcement blitz by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

During the weekend of Sept. 28-30, conservation officers laid 37 charges and 18 warnings to anglers at the Ganaraska River in Port Hope and the Cobourg Creek in Cobourg.

Charges and warnings were issued for:

Fishing without a licence
Trespassing to fish
Possessing an over-limit of salmon
Taking fish other than by angling
Fishing without carrying a licence
Fishing with a snagger
Fishing in a fish sanctuary
Snagging salmon

During the blitz, officers also laid charges and issued warnings under the Liquor Licence Act for having open liquor and seized salmon and fishing equipment.

Nice to know something is finally being done at that s**t show. Never heard of the charge of “ fishing with a snagger”, anyone know the term? Does it refer to fishing with another person who is snagging or the type of gear you have on your line i wonder

If I am not mistaken, a snagger is really just a type of gear you are using. Oversized hooks (often treble or double hook), no bait and ripped through the water hoping to snag a fish

In addition I bet many of the anglers charged were not of ethnic decent as many anglers I witnessed doing illegal fishing on September 30th when I was there were clearly Caucasian’s.

Funny thing is the only difference I see on all rivers is the ethnic people fishing illegally do it right in the open at parks where everyone can see and the Caucasians fishing illegally are on a quiet spot away from the crowds.
