We are all entitled to our opinions... Sport Fishing is a multi Billion dollar industry many many people depend on this as income not just from tournaments, how about Bass Pro or Cabelas imagine the jobs lost if no sport or recreation Fishing lol to even suggest sounds left wing to me... I am a guy that only fishes for sport or recreation but also for serenity and the closeness to nature I always look forward to some kind of surprise sighting or encounter and at the days end killed nothing... I'm going to show an example of proof that fish with injuries still feed... I do agree people need to be educated on how to handle fish to ensure it remains healthy and of course properly interpreting the MNR regs for each area and Species is critical to the survival of any species. Perhaps funding should be allocated to policing regs 1 officer per zone lol might just well have none...it's funny really how some think differently but only willing to voice opinions on forums instead of taking action, if I see someone over harvesting I say something in hopes they will feel/ think differently next time out but that's just my hopeful optimism😉I fish with guys that do keep fish for lunch or freezer but I don't eat fish so why would I keep?? I and many others handle with great care a catch that's being released. Some give a little kiss and say thanks I myself don't kiss my catch lol but I do explain to the fish it's really his/her lucky day, might not feel like it right now but in just a few minutes you get to swim away and grow bigger 😉 Some will even bite or stab you as much to say thanks for the photo op 😜 In closing lol if you want to make a difference in this world it won't be here, use your energy and time for a worthwhile cause like international poverty, child abuse, homelessness...
In the attached photo I caught an average size Northern Pike for the system..with terrible scar tissue on upper mouth..obviously from quite some time ago but has adapted to its injury/defect enough so to continue feeding... proof, it ate my barbless hook and soft plastic worm.. I removed carefully and released to continue life...again just my opinion✌️

We are all entitled to our personal takes on catch and release vs catch and keep..With closed seasons/tournaments and incidental catches we all must practice catch and release due to laws and derby rules ..
It is our responsibility as concerned anglers to do our best to ensure that released fish has the best chance of survival .. try to not handle fish at all , leave in water , turn hook out with pliers and let em go.. but some times even that doesn't work .. an out of season fish , a fish brought up from deep , a badly injured fish .. doesn't matter ..the law says it must be released ..But that's the law ..
Same as this "STUPID" law re moose , you have a cow tag and hunt the early season , cow comes out with two calves , down she goes .. two orphan calves .. guess what ..the wolves will enjoy their meal ..
Back on subject , yes I kill fish , I keep prime eaters or fish regardless of size that are in my opinion not going to survieve , A small 12" bow goes to my table and enjoyed if bleeding from gills or deeply hooked ..
WE enjoy our feeds of perch/bows/walleye and even the lowly bullhead , much better than the "Atlantic salmon on sale at local store .. Read the stats on them ..lots of growth hormones, pesticides and a bunch of stuff I can't pronounce ..
To each their own , I for one have my personal set of rules and yes I love catching fish and enjoy the meals that ma nature provides ..

Lots of great opinions re C&R...
While all fish have to deal with the wound issues, I think it is even more difficult for deep water LT and whitefish to survive the initial shock of being caught, brought up from deep water and released.
If you've already kept/killed your limit of LT/Whitefish and the next (C&R) fish happens to be profusely bleeding, bloated or worse...then you have to release a potentially "soon-to-be-dead" or already-dead fish. Not good for the LT and whitefish fishery.
In my opinion, C&R in most lakes may be too much for the fragile LT/whitefish fisheries.
Not sure what the answer is.

Even if I ask accept the fact that it I Causes a 35% reduction in eating. The fish is still alive and able to survive where as catch and eat is killing 100% of fish.
That's the thing, you don't know how many of those fish will survive. Say a C&R angler catches 5 walleye and releases them all. All of them may survive or all of them may die, or somewhere in between the two extremes. However the guy who catches and keeps his limit of, say 2 walleyes, will have killed 2 for sure. This is more predictable and managable in fish management point of view, whereas with C&R we really don't know what damage we are causing and we are simply speculating.
And reduced feeding behaviour isn't the only damage caused to fish by C&R angling.

Funny how easily "ethical" gets modified to suit selfish motivations
Reminds me of the current issue with Trump and the assassination of a journalist by Saudi Arabia. It's now ethical to continue military sales to Saudi Arabia because they are good for the bottom line of arms manufacturers and Trump's family business
"This means if we fish as individuals constantly we must practice catch and release."
Ya, actually if your ethics don't include torturing animals for entertainment the obvious choice would be not to fish constantly
Again to clarify, this is nothing to do with PETA, left wing or JT, haha. Fishing itself and releasing certain fish in certain circumstances is perfectly fine and part of the natural order of things. Fishing strictly for fun with no intent to eat what you catch - I'm sorry but you cannot claim that's ethical, no matter how inconvenient that is. Intent is the crucial keyword here.
There are plenty of other great outdoor hobbies, no one is forced to "fish constantly". Well actually some probably are but that would certainly be for consumption.

1. Serenity and closeness to nature can surely be experienced in many different ways without hurting/disturbing wildlife
2. The real question to yourself should be "I don't eat fish, so why do i fish??"
3. Magical kiss heals the wounds. That was hilarious....
Just imagine yourself beaten the s**t out of you by a big guy, for no other reason than you two crossed paths and he was looking for some entertainment, who then turns around and lets you go with a kiss, explaining to you it's really your lucky day, might not feel like it right now, but in just a few minutes you get to walk away and grow bigger nuts....lol (sounds ridicilous doesn't it!)

Lol seriously if there was a catch and release for humans then I'd expect that from time to time I may get my a## kicked especially if I kept going to the wrong side of town??? I hope this idiot isn't serious comparing Fish to Humans for sport or recreational hunting... just give your head a shake... if it were legal to c+r humans I'd start with you icecy just because you seem like a largemouth a##!! I only came back to this thread to see how people felt about the pic I posted not to be scrutinized for enjoying life... how about you get a hobby buddy get out from behind that screen if you can still fit thru the front door!!

Let me ask this question. You go out fishing. Catch your limit in 30 min. Do you go home or continue fishing. Keep everything you catch in a small lake and you and the masses will decimate the population. Many anglers in Ontario practice catch and release and that helps our population. There are also fish that the Ontario Fish Guide recommends you dont eat. So you catch a big fish and it says dont eat it what do you do? Hope some of these comments are sarcastic.
If I catch my limit, I go home. I'll even generally head out for an hour to catch one fish for a meal then head in. I don't target fish I don't intend on eating. Doesn't mean I haul in my limit (ever actually). Doesn't mean I'm decimating a small lake. I love fishing but don't go out every day. And I love pike, so not too often people are complaining about a lack of Pike in the lakes. I often release pike over 6 lbs. Just because some like to fish for food, and don't go out strictly for C&R doesn't mean they never release. The logic doesn't follow there.
