comparing last year, we have about twice as much ice according to KM reports. Check out his you tube reports from Dec 25th last year when he found 2" of ice.....looks good this year

RAM3500, here's the area I am in. North Shore west of North Bay. It's a very wide open area that is prone to heavy waves in the summer. It tends to be slower to freeze as a result.

I learned a solid lesson that day. There was 7 inches of ice all around but in that one spot it was only 2". Some people might get overly comfortable with 7 inches and then go for a swim in a soft spot. Pretty scary how variable it can be.

Thanks Kokemachine.
I was thinking this other area/(arrows) for Jan 4. New to the area and the depths look deeper
to get to the 40 plus range.

I would avoid fishing that deep unless you like a very high mortality rate in the fish you’re going to catch.

Personally, I won’t fish Walleye deeper than 30-35 FOW. Any deeper and barotrauma becomes a big issue and most fish caught at those deeper depths will almost certainly die.

Ditto first ice closer to shore.

Yeah, people are digging them for sure. They don't always want to join me out there but I'm trying to slip them in whenever I can.
