Now the cap has to be modified to cover the screw when transporting the auger. I am thinking of something like to make a hole in the cover cap for the screw and then put a rubber cover on the screw itself.

Must find out the model number. I say, if it is not Model 2704-20 or even better 2804-20 (both with max 1,200 in-lbs torque), then forget it:-)

I drilled a hole and pushed the cap from a pen into it. It was tapered soI just tapped it down until it was snug

Yep, that sounds good as long as the pen cap is sitting snugly on a screw.
