Hey guys,
Was wondering if any of you go to Freshco/ zehrs or any grocery store and buy those canned sardines, mackeral and smelt. Do you use them as bait? Was thinking of using them for ice fishing.
How small should I cut them up to put on the hook?

An Asian supermarket--Centra-- opened in Barrie this year and I have bought frozen smelts and anchovies and trolled them on Georgian Bay and Lake Ontario and caught fish on them.

I tried using the canned sardines. It’s a huge waste of money!! There so tender they just fall apart, either while putting them on the hook or as soon as you drop them in the hole. Just eat em!!! That’s what there meant for... plus they taste good. Last year at sobeys I found a a bag of hole herring just the belly was sliced out. Head and tail was still on. They worked good. I have also brought bags of herring belly sliced plus head and tail gone. Just leaves u with a half as body of a fish. They didn’t work worth a f_uck!

Used frozen smelt and herring when I lived in Sask , and here for pike , buy them with the inners still intact , great success, larger the better for pike ,use smelt for pickerel ,and pieces for perch

I have never tried them when ice fishing. I used frozen for late fall fishing under a bobber, tender, but last few casts.
