In my case I was overcome by a desire to make another doodad for ice fishing. Got a few doodads already---next time I should make a doohhickey.

I'm tired of having my chintzy little HT red wire holders tip over and being so low to grab in an emergency. So I made a couple of these with some metal garden stakes and, obviously, a chunk of wood.(Rod omitted for clarity. )

Looks pretty untipable! Good idea.

I use these, they work pretty good easy enough to get the rod out quickly.

That's the kind I have and don't like. That little leg pivots on the pin and the rod topples down into the snow---drat!!

My new plan for next trip is to drill a peg sized hole and use one of the straight rod holders that i assume are normally driven into the ground. I always have my drill for my pegs anyways and i figure even if it fully freezes it should twist right out.

i have been using the automatic fisher man
i think i could take what you have and add a simple trigger and add a couple to my set up
often people come out with me and have 2 rods but never use the 2nd a set up like that could work good on susp lakers or even whitefish just off bottom
i also find i water greater then 45ft 2 rods jigging = tangle could set this up just out of reach of worked jig
..........hmmmmmmm

That's what i have often done in the last year or 2 but I figure this way i can leave the drill at home and not have to bend over so far.

Jaw jacker(or similar device) for you deadstick is the best IMO. The first time that rod tip moves is the first time the fish knows that minnow is attached to something and likely to spit it out, by the time you pick up the rod there is nothing on it (or they swallow the damn minnow and hook). Jawjacker doesn't hesitate and stings them the instant that rod moves, every fish ive caught with it has been hooked right in the top of the mouth.

I also have some of these, rod is centered, no hinges/pretty stable. Still low to the ground tho.
