This is very scary stuff. Good thing is nobody got hurt.
We are going to get really cold Arctic air coming to Ontario in the next week or so , the ice has no snow cover so it will get stronger and thicker faster.

Yep, good reminder that while 4” is safe to walk / fish on most small lakes on big lakes far from shore on newly building ice be careful ! And always leave the zipper partially open on the door lol, would of been wild had you guys been sitting on the other 1/2 of your hut with door across from you, I guess take a knife with you in case you have to cut your way out

Hi everyone, new to the forum. Thought I would finally create an account so I post some useful info.
I was out on bear point on New Year’s Day last year ( Jan 1, 2018). Pretty much the same ting happpened. Ice was making noise all day then, all of a sudden, it started cracking like crazy.
Me and 2 friend, were walking to shallower water at around 9am when a huge crack passed between my legs. I quickly took another step so that both feet were on the same sheet of ice, then pulled my sled hard to jump the crack. My friends had to jump the crack to get on the shore side.
All the cracks turned almost perfect 90deg turns and pretty much passed through every nearby hut.

Ice expand during very cold temperature and find space to crack. Should we all drill extra few holes around us if ice wants to find space to expand than it will open up the crack from the holes you drill outside your hut to crack before it open crack inside the holes in your huts. Is it make sense?
