The northern portion of the lake, in the Oro Station/Hawkstone area finally froze Saturday. Monday afternoon I saw five guys fishing off the Oro Shoal about 2 Km out. Three or four guys, maybe of the same group, fished there yesterday.
In the last hour the ice has opened very near to shore with about 800 m of open water.
Three or four inches of ice may feel safe to walk on, but when the wind starts to blow that ice will start moving up and down, eventually breaking up. I've seen it happen out here.
Give it another week or so guys. The cold this weekend should tighten her up. Don't risk your lives or those of our first responders.

There are reports that east of Georgina island has opened up roughly 30m wide and shoots north and south for a long ways. This wind today is causing the ice I move and shift and opening up the lake. Caution should be taken and get off the lake if you are in vulnerable locations with this wind.

I agree, wait till after Sunday night -25, safe ice is safe on a small lake with no wind, seems too many people have googled 'how much ice is safe to walk on?' And forgot to factor in the wind. Wind = waves whether the lake is frozen or not geniuses! If only there were other smaller lakes that froze solid over a month ago, hmmm....

Even the Russians can be caught of guard by this phenomenon! Crazy clips, I've been moved a few feet to the side by shifting ice but it was a couple feet of ice and we weren't going up and down, I'd be full throttle to the shore if I saw that happening!

He calls himself a guide? Pathetic that anyone even tried going out there today, even if there was lots of ice, why? Maybe if there was 2 feet of ice and you had a permanent hut, but even then it was windy as hell.
