Hey Lovepesh,
I typically use 10 or 8lb mono as my main line when I’m using my centerpin. If I’m using my spinning gear I have 12 or 15lb braid.
On your main line you will have your float and split shots then place a micro swivel. From the micro attached your 4lb fluoro leader line usually 3-4 feet(arms length) and then the hook. The only thing I will put on my leader line is a bead depending on my mood or even more important the mood of the fish. If there is a lot a debris in the water I will use 6lb fluoro.
Using 6 or 4 lbs as a main line does not make sense to me. Maybe someone else can help out. if you use a 4lb main and a 4lbs leader line. The leader line is stronger than the main.
One of the main reason we use varying strength is that if you get hung up you don’t lose the entire setup. Best case is you lose the hook second is at the swivel.
You can look up "shot patterns for float fishing steelhead" in google images and you will see a bunch of information.
Sorry if you know most of this. The question you asked seemed like you could use some guidance and this may help out another member as well.

Thanks for all the help guys.
I use to fish with my dad when I was a kid a lot for bows but then we stopped due to health issues.
I just got back into fishing about 4 years ago. (im 21 now)
I love getting advise from the experienced guys like yourself ice addict and chuck.
So I think I'm going to go with 6lb or 8lb test for my main line and you mentioned you use braid for your spinning rod? do the trout not see the braided line? do you attach a leader as well when using a lure or just attach the lure to your main braided line?

When I first started steelheading I used 6lb test ande mainline, but back then we’d drop down to 2lb test leaders with crazy light loomis IM6 2-4lb rated blanks for spring clear water fishing. You could bend the rod tip to butt. There is no need for that nonsense to be honest. These days I run strictly 10lb trilene XL mainline on spinning, casting and float rigs and I don’t ever drop lower than 6lb leader. Strangely I still catch plenty of fish! I also hardly ever lose a float! Just my 2 cents.

I always spool 6lbs and never had any problems. When required, I add a 4, 3, or even 2lbs leader that I attach using a micro swivel. It all depends on the depth and clarity of the water. I agree with the previous posts. Floats are more expensive than hooks, so having your float on the main line might save it most of the time. Good luck, and have fun out there.

I wont go less than 10lb mono for my mainline, there is no reason to unless you are primarily fishing small creeks. For leader I don't use anything less than 6lb, even in smaller creeks. I used to go lighter when I started out but you quickly realize it isn't necessary.

I use 6lbs suffix elite and tie a small gammy hook, some small shots and away I go. I never seem to have issue anymore with line twist or any of that since reducing to 6 lbs. Also haven't lost a fish due to line break either. I was having a much harder time getting 10 lbs to go the places I wanted it to and spent too much time messing around with line problems.
I also am quite familiar with the pool area I fish and there are no unknowns lurking under the surface so I do t have to worry about man made garbage, shopping carts etc...
