Did well on a tributary on Thursday, tough in the wind, but the fish were biting. Caught this fish with a strange spot on the operculum, I thought it was a wound, but closer inspection showed it to be just an odd reddish purple spot, Anyone run into this before?

that's really odd..., would like to hear what it is as well.

My best guess is that it's just an old injury or just some cell/genetic anomaly

It was very strange, I ran my finger across it because I thought it looked in dented, Felt the same as the gill plate, and no blood , just colour. I can only surmise that it was an old wound healed, or a birthmark, LOL, if fish have those

Nice looking fish. Doesn't seem to be to bad off despite the abnormality.

Beautiful bow, love the colours besides the birth mark...

Very strange, I have never caught one with such a mark..

Must be a healed wound of some kind, even though it was smooth etc.
I would say small lamprey possibly.

That's a new one for me. Seen lots of steelies with a shortened operculum where it doesn't cover the gills entirely, but don't think I've ever seen a lamprey scar there. Most of the "birthmarks" I've seen on steelies were either yellow or black.

I think I have seen this before but then again I have caught so many over my life time I quite possibly have just thought I have. 😂

I think when I have seen this I thought it was more like a hickie. Like a lamprey latched on to the gill plate sucked forever and gave up due to the lack of blood flow.
