Hey Everybody,

I was out yesterday and the ice was still thick. I can't say the same for the shoreline.

I have a plastic flat bottom Kayak. I was thinking it would be possible load everything on the kayak and paddle out to the thick ice. Am I just being stupid? Have any of you every taken a canoe or kayak to get to the thicker ice? Just wondering.

Hovercraft anyone? That's a taxi service, I would pay for. LOL

Cheers.

I have not done it but I thought about it lol.

I can see it working but the ice will scratch your kayak. And I really baby my kayak so I would have to buy another one just for this type of launching

Have not done it. But I would think the hard part is being able to reach solid ice because there is likely to be a gradual change in the quality of ice so you may actually be stepping off the vessel onto questionable ice and not knowing it until you put all your weight on it. If the ice was a clear cut crap or no ice from solid ice, then it may be easier??? Make sure you don't do it alone the first few times until you get the hang of doing so.

If I had a choice I would just go to lakes further north of Simcoe. Those lakes should still have safe ice. It's a good idea in theory but is it really worth the risk. I would definitely not go alone and be prepared if you do go for a swim.

Fully agree.

Not sure how you can "transition" yourself on top of from water to soft/crap ice then to solid ice, if this is possible at all, with a kayak I mean:-) I would have tried this by now if I knew I could do it myself!:-)

Seems like a large risk for some perch.

I know ppl who did it with an inflatable up north when the shore was about 20 ft water but the main ice was solid. I also know of ppl who did in on a really last ice , pushing an inflatable all the way while wearing diving outfits and going through very often.
