Battery Storage and Care

Reluctantly the ice gear is pretty much put away. A quick question about flasher batteries, do you guys just put them away till next season or do you take them out and top up the charge during the off season ?

I charge up the ff battery once in the summer. Usually happens when I'm digging thru the garage looking for something else and see it and say to myself "ahhh forgot about you" lol

I've always topped up my fish finder battery and always put it away charged...7 years and still working great...

I leave my x67 in the basement. Usually give it a charge in the summer. Still on original battery 6-7 years now.
(I also charge it all night after every ice outing)

Mine gets rigged up on the yak from time to time so it gets a charge or 2 thru the softwater season... Other than that it's in the basement with terminals disconnected

I’ve been doing the same, full charge before storage then possibly a summer charge. As Washout stated, an overnight charge after use.
I was thinking of trying a monthly charge but now I’m not sure it’s worth the trouble.

After having a brand new battery die in the offseason, I actually set an appointment on my calendar to ensure I top it up in the summer.
Aside: battery was still under warranty, by one week, so no harm no foul.

I charge them up and then disconnect the negative feed. Do the same with my boat batteries, except I leave them in the boat.

I take my battery and charge it full for a couple of days. Then I store it inside on a wooden shelf. Never store it on concrete as it will discharge.

I also always charge my battery immediately after I come home from ice fishing and never let it get cold. Even when I pack the night before my fish find and battery are never packed in the truck over night.

I have two rules for all my batteries. Keep them charged and keep them warm.

I have 4 starting batts and 4 deep cycles as well as 4 portable fish finder batts.

they all go in a corner of basement fully charged for winter and if in sorage get a boost every 4 months....no issues on any

my nephew has 2 new batteries every year cause he puts them away uncharged every year for decades and has 2 dead ones every spring/early summer...he just will not learn

In the past it was not a myth at all but the bigger cranking and deep cycle batteries use better and different plastic cases that don’t do this anymore.

What I dont know is if the brick batteries used for portable fish finders are constructed with the same casing materials. They are most likely made over seas so I would expect the technology may in fact not be up to those cranking and large deep cycles made in North America. Better safe than sorry so sorry just put them on my wooden work bench or shelf.

I just dont change it as it’s easy and it works. Sometimes old school is just good enough. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I have a piece of 2x10 that I keep mine on. As mentioned, better safe then sorry.

I would agree for sure that the extra little effort of a plank for sure helps also prevents scratches on concrete, so basically we are on same page

That's from the dark ages. "Brick" batteries can be mounted in any position so that should give you a pretty good clue. My FLA batteries are stored on cement, however they are all connected to maintainer chargers full time. so far I get between 8-12 years out of them
