Lake Erie walleye were being caught from shore by the tributary mouths this week, but heavy winds put a halt to that. We can hope that the walleye catch picks up again when fishing conditions are favorable. Some anglers have complained that the water is too cold, which might affect fishing patterns, but will not stop them from feeding. Walleye have been hitting from Shades Beach to GE in depths of 50 feet to 52 feet. Walleye fishing has been even better off The Point at about the same depths and shallower.
Perch fishing has been better than walleye fishing. East of Erie, the area west of Freeport has been good along the 42-foot contour. Those are reportedly some very large perch. Perch still are being caught inside North East Marina, an opportunity shore anglers should not miss. Other hot spots have been at 32 feet to 36 feet off Shades Beach and in depths of 32 feet to 40 feet off the Sunoco Crib. West of Erie, the best perch fishing reported has been at depths of about 42 feet off Trout Run and to the west.
