That's why I always tell people that if all they can afford is a sit inside kayak, don't bother buying one unless you are just going to use it on small cottage lakes. Wait and save up for a proper kayak or find a good deal on something used. Also, spend the money and get a portable VHF radio with GPS so you can use the man overboard feature to let the coast guard know your exact location.

If you are going to be going out on big water like the Great Lakes or Lake Simcoe saving money on a 10' sit inside kayak just isn't worth it.

Many good reminders in that story. He was lucky that day.

That was definitely a miracle.
Safety is a systematic thing — vessel, garments, signals(whistle, flag, VHF), etc.
A flip and re-entry practice is a must, IMO.
The guy in the following story was in A HOBIE PA, BTW.

My basics rules:

1) NEVER, ever challenge the weather, especially the wind, any guts over 20km stay home, use Wind Finder
2) PFD always on, PFD with high visibility marks (not camo)
3) From Oct to April survival suit on
4) cell phone in the pocket
5) VHF station on great lakes
6) take it slowly and know the water, the water body
7) two engines of locomotion (paddle + motor)

I do fish and venture far in: Georgina Bay, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie (one of the worst of all great lakes for kayaks), Simcoe lake.

Have fun and be safe.
