Not nearly as vivid, but a similar mark in almost the exact same spot on the gill plate, i will be keeping my eye on it, never really noticed these before, this fish was bi-catch fishing cats, as you can see by the chunk of goo in its face, 35” pike hit the bank as well, and the cats are still biting

Looks like scar tissue damage to me. Strange that it is in the exact same spot. Is it possible these fish are swimming up some sort of narrow opening either manmade or natural and banging thier heads on rocks or an obstruction.
