I arrived at my cottage last Sunday and levels have gone up at least 12” since then. Water is already over most docks in the South Bay so damage levels are already occurring. Barrels to weigh docks down have sprouted up all over. Hopefully it doesn’t rise much more but I’d guess it will rise another 12” as it hasn’t seemed to slow its rising yet.

I have seen significantly higher water a couple of times in my life. First time I was very young and don’t remember it well in 1960 and the second time was 1979. Hopefully it doesn’t reach those levels.

Unfortunately more water yet to come for Nipissing Shank. Lake levels are now well above 10 years ago and still climbing. My neighbour who's been on the lake, forever, says he can only remember 2 years worse in the last 50...once back in the 90's, then sometime in the 70's. With the regular east winds we've been having the past week or so...water has piled up at times down at the west end of the lake, inflicting extensive damage in some places. On the south shore where we are, one of my neighbours has already lost their barrel weighted dock, with several more in jeopardy should we get strong winds and wave action over the next couple weeks....and the lake hasn't, as yet, seen a really bad spring wind storm since the main lake ice sheet melted. The Mattawa area....the situation's even worse. They slowly started opening the dams down the French last week to help relieve the pressure in Nipissing...I'm sure shoreline owners there will also be concerned going forward. For every centimetre of water released out of Nipissing in a day, it can push water levels up as much as 48cms in areas along the French. With snow still melting in the watershed north of Nipissing and the ground saturated...not able to absorb much more water...any rain falling just basically accumulates in the lake, at as much as 4 times each measured rainfall amount. Everyone along the lake's shoreline are holding their breath and hoping for the best through the next couple weeks. Looks like there may be more pain yet to come.

Grumpa,
I looked it up on the weekend and the years the lake was higher were 1972 where the level peaked at 196.669 and 1960 where the level was 196.639. Records were available back to 1951. We are at 196.450 now as per the news publications up there. This data is from the link below. https://wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/report/histori...tml?stn=02DD021
All the docks around me are underwater now. I also have seen some logs floating by so boaters should be careful out there.
The Sturgeon River is flowing around 260 cubic meters per second. The French River is up to 540 - 550 cubic meters per second. A cubic meter is 1000 liters. 540 of them is 540,000 liters a second. That is over 32 million liters of water a minute. Boggles the mind.
I added sandbags to the front of my place this past weekend. Water is up on the shore and a strong wind could be trouble. I hope things level off soon! The good news is that my dock was wiped out last year from the ice and while I demoed it I haven't replaced it yet so that cannot get any worse.

I think you mean cubic meter of water.Things are on the brink in West bay, wind wise it looks better for the west end for a few days, maybe not so good for the south end.

Sorry to hear about your dock Neil...but maybe a blessing and fortuitous you didn't replace it. My current dock was built to withstand possible high lake levels and wave action but my breakwall and shoreline...a different story altogether. The first really bad windstorm across the lake will be the test case for how bad damage could get. Dock and shoreline debris has been floating past us regularly coming from the Callander area to the east. I pick up dock crib material, blocking and various other objects along the shoreline daily. Property owners are starting to sandbag all around us. Unfortunately, I don't think there'll be any significant relief for a few weeks yet. They can't open the flood gates down the French without creating a similar or even worse problem down there as well.
our group is heading Callendar way next week, any locals know if launches are in jeopardy this side of the lake as well?
"Boaters are reminded that if operating a vessel on the lake or river that they should be doing so without causing a wake. West Nipissing police say there are increasing enforcement of the Sturgeon River and Lake Nipissing."
just curious?? how does one operate a vessel without causing a wake?? the smallest of boats still cause a wake! I can say this, in this west arm we have many who couldn't care less about wake, everyone on the west arm knows of the 3 cabin cruisers that are all about themselves and don't care what they damage, are they going to enforce that? I will answer that question myself, NO!
want to cause "no wake"? then ban motorized vessels, I know it sucks but people are losing their properties, belongings and livelihood.
*** exception.. owners and outfitters travelling to or from an island or water access only location

west arm... i didn't mean to offend anyone , my family has a cottage up that way and yes there is potential of flooding as well where we are. ( callendar way ) but from who we talked to the west end of the lake was much worse due to the winds pushing water that way more than the east end.
you asked " just curious?" yes i was just curious that why i asked if any locals had any insight on the east end of the lake. - i read this article different and this was directed at the west end towards sturgeon river. my apologies if i offended you with my curiosity.
i am fully aware of the severity and the loss that this brings.

no no dan, absolutely wasn't referring to you in any way shape or form, I was referring to the article, when I said just curious it was in respect to the article saying "they should be doing so without causing a wake" I meant just curious of how you operate a boat without a wake?
you have no need to apologize it must have been my wording that was wrong, I will edit it. cheers and sorry for the confusion.
