st Claire river

from Guelph area , anything happening on the river (Windsor) picks and silvers , have a kayak ,where could I launch ? thanks

DR has been on fire for a month now, ST Clair river just getting into full swing, prob about 2wks before the silvers to move into the DR.

I ve seen a couple of kayakers in LASALLE 3 wks ago. You can probably launch there in the park. I'd watch the border (or you can buy a Michigan license) and big ships if you do go to the US side.

It amazing how close some people like to get to the freighters. I was out on the SCR couple weeks back. this big freighter coming down stream starts blowing its horn. Look back and see this little tinny. This tinny doesn't move the freighter blows horn again several times. tinny still doesn't move. Freighter blows again several times, still no movement. Tinny finally moves a bit. when the freighter passes the tinny, we can't tell how far it missed it by but looked like it was touching the freighter. Way closer than I would be. those things are so big, even at a save distance they are scary. I had a freighter go by me couple years ago, he opens the bridge window, thought he was going to yell at me, but I was to the side a fare bit. He sticks his head out and asks how the fishing.

It's not necessarily the size of the ship but the size of the wake as they push water towards you.
The Coast Guard and the OPP can fine you if you don't back off.

grew up in Sarnia,as a kid we used to go down to the bridge and watch the big boats , have total respect for them , pretty awesome sight , but not up close in the water !!

Every year while out trolling, I have some freighters coming at me at 1/2 speed pushing a 9-10 foot wake off the bow.. I move and so do they....but avoid at all costs and take the wake right on the stern if possible

A few years ago I was fishing the flats by fighting island and a freighter was anchored in the river by the salt mines. The fishing had been hit and miss so we joined the pack of boats that were drifting the length of the freighter repeatedly bow to stern. There were literally a hundred boats doing this drift so many that you could practically jump boat to boat. Well the coast guard cutter decided to rip past, on the outside of the pack pushing a 4 or five foot wake out. This caused a huge bumper boat scenario were all the boats bumped 10 ft over toward the freighter. A couple of guys in a brand new 18ft lund tyee got the scare of there life when they got pinned onto the freighter and the edge of their boat started to slide under the freighter. With the current being so fast on the detroit they had no ability to do anything but hope they didnt get crushed. Luckily they were ok but their boat looked like it was shredded on the outside.

Things can happen very quick on the water, If you are venturing out by kayak I would suggest out of windsor city marina as it is a much quicker swim to the break wall and that area holds fish all year.
