We finally got out on the water for Northerns as they opened up this past weekend. Water temps were at 45-46 degrees, too cold for pike but the rainbow trout were blowing up everywhere. We must have caught 15 or so, released most but kept our limits over the course of the weekend. 1 9lb Laker too (c&r).

Depot harbour has some thick fish. My only thing is I know what these farmed fish are fed and it’s nasty. I fished these in the winter through the ice and when I cleaned them they had a huge layer of fat in them with very defined fat rings in the meat. I tried one fillet and it wasn’t my cup of tea. Maybe on a smoker they would be better.

When we filleted them, they had nymphs in their belly and almost no fat on them. We bbq'ed them with lemon and spices. If the smoker was at the cottage, we would have smoked them for sure.

Yes they look like lakers inside and fins are undereveloped cause they don't move much. But the meat is like a store bought fish and it's probably better compared to Chilean or Norwegian pen fish .
I'm always puzzled as to why there are no eat recommendations for say Georgian Bay whitefish or lakers in MOECC fish eating guide yet the commercial tugs harvest the same fish and its sold in grocery stores without any warning labels.
