Hooked up with an old friend last weekend, he bought a 16’8 boat and was interested in trying some great lakes fishing, he doesn’t have downriggers, but had a couple smaller sized Dipseys and was wondering if it was do-able. Headed out first light through the Burlington shipping Canal and into 100 fow, being the third season without a boat for me, I was glad to dust off the five color, Seven colour and full core set ups, as well as a mono and wire dipsey set up. Action was steady till about 10:00 am, All of the set up’s took fish, six colours of lead core being the hot ticket with a NASCAR spoon, Took a mixed bag of kings, cohos, rainbows and one laker. We ran his Small dipseys off offshore planer boards and caught fish that way as well, kind of rotated through a bunch of stuff, even got a rainbow on a 2 ounce snap weight off the planer board. I just thought I’d post this to let all those guys that don’t have downrigger’s know that it’s still possible to get into fish out there without them, even over 200 feet plus, lead core, copper, dipseys And snap weights can be effective down to about 60 feet, add a wire set up with a magnum Dipsy and you can effectively fish down to about 80 feet, Good luck out there
