Dunville, Grand River

Hey Guys,

Anyone ever fish down out of Dunville? Just wondering how any of you have made out. I have been down there to fish below the damn in the river several times but never much luck other than some big ol' cat fish and drum. Is the water always murky down there? I'm talking less than 6" of visibility. And is there anything other than cat fish?

Lots of fish species in the lower grand. In the spring we target big cats, when walleye open the fishing is good but there is a knack to get them. Summer time bass and pike are the target for some but we prefer to get out in the lake for the walleye. Come late fall walleye start to return. When the lower freezes there are a crap load of people ice fishing for walleye.

I actually made my way down to Caledonia last Sunday, got minnows at the store by the damn and drove down towards York to a couple pools that are usually have less guys.
Their was 5/6 guys fishing in the river 50ft from the damn, but that’s nothing new.
When I got down to York the water levels were so low, way lower than I’ve ever seen in that section. I kept jumping in my car and driving down 5 more minutes to the next bend/bridge each time the fish were no where to be seen. Tons of minnows everywhere though, lol

I gave up my search for fishable water when I hit Cayuga and still had nothing for water in the creek, saw one guy fly fishing the only small spot that had 3ft of water and left him to it.

Next trip that way will either be in dunnville section, closer to the lake and hopefully the fish will be stacked there waiting on the minnows to arrive.

Lol yeah, it's kind of disgusting to see other anglers have no regard for the general rule of not fishing within 75ft (or 23m) of a dam. What makes it even worse is there is a giant sign (at least in Dunville) that states the rule and people still disregard it. I didn't know where to get minnows but next time I will be stopping in Caledonia!
I've heard above the Dunville is also pretty good but I have yet to try there.

I was fishing Dunnville in tHe spring for cats and the OPP come to check for the usual boat stuff. There were two boat anchored not further than 20 feet from the dam and I said to the two officers you going to ask them to move and only got a shrug of the shoulders. The two boats kept on fishing next to the dam.

River is low and always off colour, but just fish it, multi species blast

Mooneye , rising all over, dry fly dream if you hit it right

And eyes if you work hard enough

I like to target the cats, but you can basically catch anything you want, you just have to change tactics

And yes there are lots of hard fighting drum, and carp, every species requires a different approach

Your absolutely right. The Grand is defiantly a multi specie river. That’s the beauty of that waterway.
