Salmon Spectatular, Owen Sound

Folk does anyone know how the derby is going? Was talking to a buddy of mine and they didn't catch a fish in 2 days of trolling. .

I have been following the daily results online and it seems like there are a lot of fish being weighed in. Bigger average this year.
Haven't talked to anyone that has fished yet this derby but a couple of my buddies are fishing today and tomorrow and I plan on going Saturday. Hope there is still a few around

The leading fish is a 29.50 lb salmon. It's good to see that the Georgian Bay salmon are doing well size wise. Daily entry numbers seem impressive but maybe that should be expected when you consider the number of boats involved. The funnel shape of the Owen Sound Bay creates quite the concentration of boats in the southern section. Best of luck to any site members fishing the derby.

Been there every day but Tuesday I live in Durham so I’m only half hour away we got o e 4.5 pound bow on Saturday but my buddy is getting quite a few abd we expect to start doing better ourselves after yesterday’s weather tons of fish coming in more then past years and size is way way up

I was there last Saturday and Sunday. The fishing compared to the number of boats sucked the first couple of days. We had one rip and release. We had fish chasing bait on the rigger the would fall off near dark. Friday and Saturday combined for a here were just over 200 fish weighed in to start the derby and the Sunday had over 200 fish weighed in in the morning according to the fish count at the side of the weigh in station.

First day out for the derby was yesterday out of Meaford. Trailered from Penetang, solo for the day. Ended the day 7/9
Bay flipped, cold water everywhere. Managed to figure them out. First light went deeper and midday came to the shallows. A few lakers and salmon in the morning then around noon Landed a 16lb salmon. Good for 7th place but didn’t weigh it in. The drive from Meaford to the sound then the weigh in and ultimately a long drive home alone wasn’t worth weighing a fish in when it was a good chance it wouldn’t make the daily top 10. I like the excitement of being in the derby but having to drive to the sound to simply weigh a fish in is a pain! I may go back tomorrow.

Been out everyday morning and night. Ice cold water everywhere now..Been on the miday board 4x. But only managed to hold one. Took 4th. Night bite has been tougher than usual.

Heading up after work today. Is there been any consistent depth that the fish have been hitting at? I find I spend most of my time washing lures in that 50 - 70 foot depth.

Question, can you tell the difference between a salmon caught from Lake Ontario and one from Georgian Bay?

Just my suspicious nature, but what is to stop someone from catching one of the "large" Lake Ontario Chinooks, putting it on ice, driving up to Owen Sound and making out that it was caught up there.

We know people have cheated in tournaments in the past.

Not trying to start any rumours, just wondering.

I do know that in the rules and regulations, it mentions that any fish entered can be subject to a biological examination and testing.
Yikes! Sounds pretty official.
I can just imagine explaining to a judge why there was a parking receipt for Bronte harbour in the winning salmons stomach!

Personally, I find the inference that the leading salmon could be an illegal entry quite offensive. This tournament has been in place for many years and has safeguards in place to ensure that all entries are legitimate. To answer the question concerning one's ability to determine the difference between a Georgian Bay and Lake Ontario salmon, my response would be that a visual comparison by an individual would be meaningless. However, the Sydenham Sportsman's Club would surely have access to biological testing protocols that would ensure the integrity of the derby. Let the organizers use their discretion prior to the awards ceremony rather than voicing unnecessary doubts about the leading fish.

Gbay/huron has 30 plus pound fish again. While lake o fish are way smaller on average then 10 years ago. Cheaters are cheaters. Can it happen? Of course it can. There are dishonest people everywhere. Not sure if its worth bringing this up. What are you trying accomplish by raising this issue?
