The evening bite was on!

Made it out after I got home from work and cooked dinner for the family just barely by 6 pm. My son has been wanting to try casting for fish in shallower water with spoons and some skien we cured for a while now and today was a great day to go shallow and drift. We went somewhere to do just that and just enjoyed the weather and the show the fish were putting on for us jumping all around us. After about an hour we had no luck and started weighing our options.

I suggested we flatline for the 45 minutes or so of light we had left and he liked the idea as well. I left my bigger rods at home and just had a 7'2" with a bait caster spooled with 15 lb braid and an 8-pound mono leader. We were trolling into the sunset holding our rods when I felt a little bump, I suspected a smally had nailed my lure when my rod doubled over and my drag began peeling. I started worrying that I hadn't used this rod in forever and last time I did was on a back lake where I was beating the line off stumps rocks etc and I never changed my leader. I loosened my drag back a ways to try and salvage a break-off and just kept my thumb on the spool to be able to adjust drag pressure manually on the fly. About 20 minutes later and with the sun going down over the horizon we managed to get the fish in the boat. It was by far the best fight I have had this year, having to use a bass rod to reel in a salmon makes you really feel the burn! The fish measured 34 inches and it managed to somehow have enough energy to swim off in a hurry when we got her back in the water.

We decided to keep trolling for a couple of minutes back towards our exit and my rod went off again about 3 minutes later. This fish felt much smaller but was shaking and ripping way more than the first one. I handed it off to my son who was still in awe about us landing a salmon on the little bass rod and it was his turn. After about 5 minutes he got the fish to the boat and we were 2 for 2! He held it up for a picture without even thinking about it, a feat he has yet to pull off with a salmon that was fresh out of the water. I took a few photos and he started yelling that he finally did it! He managed to hold one for the camera, no gloves or funny business. The fish politely soaked him with a big tail swipe apon release and hopefully is off to make more fish

I almost called off work to go out in the morning Ralph, glad I didn't with that fog!

He always just grabs them but they fly out of his hands and he will just end up bear hugging or propping thr fish on the seat to grab a photo. It was just funny to see him hold it up and then get all excited he was holding it bmup before he even realized it

I wish Newburg! Killer day at work and I'm all beat up, the wardens at work and the youngest one has to much fight in him and doesn't want to go. I am planning to kick off work early on Friday and hopefully the weather holds till then. Just having some calm water was a blessing in its self, I was starting to think my back would need physio if all we kept getting was chop like we have been.

For sure Disco, the reason I fish is that my son asked me to get into it with him a year ago. I have more memories with him by leaps and bounds than I have of my father growing up, I hope one day he remembers this when he grows up. He's my main fishing buddy, I have only ever fished without him 2 - 3 times since we started and those were to scout spots mainly while he was in school! Get your kid on a big salmon with a medium 7 foot casting rod and a little baitcasting reel if you ever have the chance, I bet he will never forget that!
