With the upcoming season I am going to be switching over to the clam plate and an 8” auger. I was just wondering what you guys prefer to run on the auger plate. I have the Milwaukee m18 fuel drill but I haven’t made up my mind on the auger to go with it. I am leaning towards either the fin bore 3 or the strikemater lazer. Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Redbeard

No one can say if the drill will be fine with an 8” auger as you would have to know how many inch pounds of torque the drill has. Mine is an 18 volt fuel Milwaulkee. But it’s about 3-4 years old and has 650lb of torque. It can not handle 8” auger but is a smash on 6” augers.
Do you know how many lbs of torque your Milwaulkee has?

Good call. I am going by what my buddy is using and his drill is the same as mine with high torque and has no problems with his 8. We bought our drills together 2 years ago. Not sure the exact torque level but over 650 for sure. I use a 7 inch auger and it works crazy fast.

Disco I just bought the kit this spring. it has the powerstate brushless motor that can deliver up to 1200 ft/lbs of torque. It also came with 2 - 5 amp/hr batteries. Based on what I have read about it, the drill should work for an 8” auger. I am really just wondering what are everyone’s opinion on which auger bit to buy to go with it. So far I am leaning towards the fin bore 3

Redbeard oh yes you have the right drill. I will trade you straight up. Lol.
I use a old a## 6” auger with sharp Swede bore blades. I don’t think you can go wrong with either auger as the blades are the real tell tail of good cutting.

You will be fine with the 1200lb/ft torque M18 Fuel. I have the same one and it had no problem blasting through the ice with an 8". I went from an old finbore to a Kdrill this season. My fin bore was great. Lasted 8 year. It got bunched up on the ice this year due to a frozen rock in the ice and bent the auguer and therefore would not drill right anymore. So i got a Kdrill this year. Buddies love it and it is super light also. I like that it is designed to re-cut holes like other augers are not too. I take the 5 amp and 2 amp batteries with me. a 5amp hr battery with an 8 in finbore got me between 25 and 30 holes in approx. 15 to 20in of ice.

co worker has that same drill with 8" lazer, used with clam. He used this last year on Nippissing and said he never went through 1 battery. I use a dewalt hammer brushless with a 5ahr batter 8" lazer with clam. Last winter on simcoe I could get 16 holes per battery. That drill you have will give you a lot more holes. Remember the number of holes you get depends on the number of inches drilling through.

I'm using the strikemaster lazer 8" with the same drill you have.
My buddy had the same setup but with the finbore. He ended up switching to the lazer last year after he compared the 2 side by side. The finbore blades got dull on his after 2 seasons. Mine are still going strong after 4 seasons.

I don't doubt that. Just saying what happened to his and seeing both in action.
