We are surrounded by very tall Maple and Beech trees.
The nut crop on the Beeches has been very prolific this year as have the seeds on the Maples.
When we get years like this, for a few days in October we will be invaded by migrating Grackles as they come to feed on the nuts and seeds.
For the last few days there has been a large flock of probably around 1000 in the immediate area.
The picture below was taken through my dining room window of the North side of my lot. There were equally as many birds to the South and West on the property. As well as being on the ground, the trees were full of them as well.
I worked in the yard all afternoon and made sure I wore a hat!
Folklore has it that when the nut crop is extra large as it has been this year, that it is warning for a bad Winter. Last couple of years the snow hasn't been too bad here at Horseshoe Valley. Hope it stays that way this year.
