Bait Requirements, Transport across Zones

I was looking through the Regulations and could not find what someone said existed.

It was mentioned to me that the Regulations have changed and you are not allowed to transport Bait fish between Zones and use it out of the zone it was purchased within.

So If I buy minnows in Zone 16 and drive to Zone 15 is this legal.

Also, am I required to keep a receipt?

Anyone know?

I was under the impression this has always been the case for live bait only. Could be wrong. I don't use live bait anyway.

Anglers will not be able to move live bait outside the zone of their primary residence as part of a new bait management strategy proposed earlier this week by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF).

They will be able to harvest and transport live bait in their own zone without additional documentation, but when fishing elsewhere, would have to purchase bait in the zone they are fishing in as part of Ontario’s draft Sustainable Bait Management Strategy released Monday, Sept. 30.

When outside their home zone, anglers must keep a receipt on hand to show proof of purchase location. It will remain valid for two weeks, the ministry stated.

@wilson is correct, that’s how I understood the rules.

Hmm I didn't know that. I always buy bait where I'm going anyways though.

Would that apply to worms? Or just baitfish.

Will see many bait shops close up if this comes into effect. Most of the shinners that are used in the winter come from simcoe. These shinners will not beable to be sold past Severn Bridge area. Going to have to learn how to catch fish ice fishing with out minnows. Most poeple won't beable to trap there own.

not sure if that went through or not, but do think its a good thing for the lakes

Just downloaded the new fishing regulations for 2020 and there is no mention of this. Maybe it will come into play next year... sometimes my minnows last me 3-4 weeks, not sure why they would expire after 2 weeks.

So I can't pick up minnows at Huronia Bait and take it to Muskoka> Really?

Baitfish - and it appears they are including leeches as well.

My understanding is that the proposed changes to Ontario’s Sustainable Bait Management Strategy and the BMZ's are still in the preliminary stages, which means it's not in full force and effect as of yet.

From what I understand it is a proposal and is not in the 2020 Regulations so I would say therefore it would not currently apply. Therefore they way I see it, if you move bait between zones right now you are no contravening any laws.

Correct me if I am wrong . but wasn't this already in place approx. 8 years ago?
