Spent a great 4 days fishing on Temagami. Caught enough burbot and whitefish to eat and bring lots home for eating and smoking (whitefish).
Pic is of 4lb whitefish.
John and Jennie are great hosts. I understand that they get very busy once the trout season opens Feb 15.

Beautiful whitefish! Grats on the smoker fare!

We normally go up with John that very weekend (Feb 15th), this year we had to change our normal plans and we are going up a week earlier. I have always had really good luck with lakers and walleye where John has his huts.

This year we will obviously not be able to target the lakers so we will be going heavy on whitefish and walleye. Just curious, were you getting the whitefish on the tip-up spreaders from the huts or were you going more shallow (30-60)?

Whitefish and burbot at 60ft with tipups in the hut. Caught 1 burbot at 40ft with my rod out on the ice about 100 yds from hut.

At least 6 inches of black ice on Sunday - probably added another 1-2 by the time we left on Thursday.
It was -22 on Wed morning, and -25 on Thursday morning.

A couple of inches of snow on top. Easy walking.

Lots of sleds, cars and pick-ups travelling on the ice. You could hear the ice groaning and cracking when the trucks drove by. Personally, I wouldn't take a car or truck out without at least 10" under the tires. Fortunately, they kept moving.

Little late on asking but what were you using to catch the whitefish? We are heading up in a few weeks to try our luck.
