Nipigon trip this May

Heading to Nipigon for the first time this spring, hoping to beat my personal best brookie that has stood since '82. I will have a few extra days on the drive from southern Ontario to fish other spots along the way. Any must-do recommendations for a trout angler along that route?
Will have my 16' boat and a kayak.

That’s a trip I always wanted to do ....are you staying with an outfitter or camping on crown. That water is legendary!!! I’m jealous.

Many of the lakes in Lake Superior Park are worth a visit if you are going through that way. Gorgeous drive too.

I’ve passed that way to moose hunt and dreamed of the fishing opportunities.

I am very lucky to be good friends with on the best guides in Northern Ontario, Tyler Dunn. Us and a few other friends will be setting up a base camp on crown land.
I've fish the Soo rapids and a couple lakes near Webbwood but will likely try some smaller lakes closer to Nipigon once I determine what looks most appealing. LSPP is a possibility.

Any of the rivers from Terrace Bay to Nipigon are well worth a shot...both brook trout and steelhead depending on when you are there

I assume you will be fishing the river and not the actual lake? Nipigon is a MASSIVE water body and a 16' boat is..small...to say the least. Getting as far north as you can is the ticket for Nip, my best friend guided out there for years. Webbwood Eh...fishing my back yard LOL. Spend most of my time in that area.

Agreed! Took my 16' Alaskan 50hp out on the big lake this year, had to change my underwear a couple times. That water is cold and turns up in no time and good luck getting someone to rescue you in time out there. Stick to the river if you know what's good for you. Wouldn't go back out on the lake with anything less than 18' 90hp, CB radio and enough food and warm clothing to last a couple days incase you get stuck out on shore somewhere for a couple days. Problem with the lake is there a very few launches and to get to the good brookie water takes a looooong run out. They're are safer areas to take your boat out with BIG brookies. Yes, the big guiding services have 30ft ocean style boats that tow 16 footers behind until they get farther up North. And you were running one of the best 16' boats for rough water. Also, get ready for the fish...those "coasters" look totally different than most creek/lake specs, more like splake than specs.

I haven’t been there in 12 year but before that we made 3 seasonal week long trip , we stay at a little camp ground right on the lake past the river and a small marina from there we fish in front where the lake discharge in the river and yes very dangerous water got to read the cloud and wind change .We had a lot of success and some day we could not go out at all so we went river fishing bellow a river dam that discharges in the lake ,big river and full of walleyes . We caught and released over 400 between 4 of us in 2 days and eat ours limit every night

Fishing both lake and river, friend has 20' boat also.

Yes Webbwood, had a kayak fishing tournament at Black Bear Camp. Caught some decent lakers. Caught some decent walleye in Espanola too.

yes so jealous. my buddy has talked to me a couple times, about a trip up there. He'd tow is camper and I would pull my 20ft jon boat.
