Options after closer

Some species are still open after March 15th (but not on Nipissing). With kids out of class for 3 weeks, anybody have suggestions on what to fish and where to go?

You definitely have to do some homework on what’s open in your area and what body of waters you can fish.
I’m sure your kids will enjoy some time out, I hope you can make it happen for them.

I will assume your are looking in the general area of Nipissing i.e Zone 11 although the zone does stretch quite a way north from Nip and it's not hard to burn 2 hours+ getting to some of those lakes from North Bay. I would suggest looking at the Zone 11 exceptions for year round brookies and lake trout. Lakes are listed in the reg summary complete with coordinates. That's my plan after the 15th - back lake brookies and lake trout. Some of the listed lakes are even drive to and if you do some research via Fish Online you may even find a lake or two that has trout, burbot and perch.

Google earth/maps and Ontario Make a Topo Map are good tools for trying to figure out access. The Make a Topo map has layers that can be turned off and on to show lot lines vs. crown land and will also let you look at the sat images the maps are based on. Depending on the area these images are often better resolution and/or more recent than the ones provided by Google.

Make a topo also shows portages between lakes that are usually snowshoe friendly and sometimes even snowmobile friendly.
