Gps, What GPS you guys reccomend

Hey guys and girls,

I'm looking to get a little lost this summer. Is there any gps that you would recommend for a little backcounty fishing and hiking. Nothing too crazy expensive, I'll probably end up using it about twice a year. Thanks in advance

personally for hand held i only go with garmin. I have had others and were not worth the money and quit working. I have my first garmin and now a newer bigger one with a chip. But both still work.

If you have cell signals use your phone and mark your location.
I use a Garmin radio Rino 755. We use these radios off grid signals for hunting and fishing there pricey but you wont need another one. Picked mine up in the US they have stronger signal transmit to 5km. 750 model should be less and suit your needs.

Took a look at the rino 750. It looks tough and has a good range compared to others. It's still a bit pricey, but it looks like one that I wont regret buying. I think it's the one I'll go with. Thanks again for the reccomendation.

I have had my Garmin 78 for quite a few years. It works OK but a cell phone works quite well too---sometimes faster with the touch screen to pan and zoom.

I have 2 Magellan handheld colour screen and topo maps since 2008 have never let me down .I like Magellan because the topo maps were way cheaper then garmin because i could just buy the ontario maps for them not sure if garmin has that option now or they may all be preloaded with topo maps .

Most come preloaded. If you run into no map issues just plot your locations especially your car and camp. Garmin radios can also locate others on same channel once you accept them then point arrow and walk to them.

2008 eh Sparky . ? I don't want to slam you about Magellan or it would be called a physical mugging on vehicle GPS . LOL MY 59 dollar outdated on sale Garmin smoked that 400 or was it 500 Magellan unit in my truck and still working but heah lol

I just dug out my latest and greatest Garmin 64 s . .Miss my 78 I think it was .Grew feet it seems . lol

Garmin on all units from water or land suck unless you can add or remove the micro sd card .!!!!!! Garmin sucks if no slot chip spot so look close before you buy .

My 64s came with that slot and I bought Back Roads Mapbook which was 200 bucks . My graph which is Raymarine on boat had a sale with Navionics chip included WHICH I CAN slide into 64s . Over 200 buck chip . Good for icefishing

Garmin is not known to have chip slots without upgrading to higher end models and why I say they suck but I have .

Garmin !!!! my personal experience positive over Lowrance,magellan etc handhelds . ? They fly picking up signals . . Like smoke anything else or test what I say .!!!! Take any brand in your basement and compare .

Now can I use one beyond beginner ? !!!! lol . Nope but winging it . Yup many Garmin sonars have built in Navionics chip but what good is that if you can't transfer spots to your handheld on the ice ?

Exactly why I got a 64 s and my Raymarine dragonfly .Saved money and convenience of chip slot and lets not forget power plugin . LOL

Research GPS gear and price . Garmin isn't cheapest but they last . No chip slot in my 59 dollar truck GPS but updates . 4th year and going strong .

Didnt magelkan disable older models end of the 90's? Quite a few ppl were ticked. My garmin gpsmap 60 s lost all the decals from age but still working fine after all these years

I have a garmin 64s and absolutely love it. I use it every year for hunting. Never loose signal and easy to use. Also comes on sale for cheap alot

My Garmin works fine but if I didn't aleady have one I would not buy one. I would use a smartphone instead----lots of apps free or cheap.

My biggest worry about the phone idea is the range. Will it still tell me where I am in the middle of Algonquin?

It works off sat reception so I think it would. You might want to google that a bit though. We used it out on G bay last year beyond cellphone coverage. With the touch screen it was faster to
use than the Garmin, which we also had.

Cell phones do not rely on cell towers for GPS coordinates. They get them directly from the satellites in the same way that dedicated GPS units do.

All iPhones since the 4S have supported GPS and GLONASS and the iPhone 8 and X added support for Galileo (European GPS) as well. The main difference between a dedicated GPS and a modern phone is the number of simultaneous channels that they can link to, the frequency of updates, and the sensitivity of both the antenna and the receiver. It is speculated that the iphones are limited to 24 channels of GPS and the receivers like those in the bad elf are capable of 66. Having more channels can improve startup time and ultimately accuracy but ESRI has tested the iPhone to 90%/3M accuracy under open skies, and external systems (bad elf) to 99%/3M accuracy.
