Our family went up north to our cottage this weekend for a change of scenery. We drove up Friday afternoon with very little traffic. It’s almost eerie how few people are out and about.
My son and I decided to fish Saturday morning as they were calling for heavy showers on Sunday. Since all tackle shops were closed and we didn’t want to stop anywhere it was fishing with lures only.
There was great ice with no open spots close to shore. We had 4 inches of white ice on top of 12 inches of clear ice. Great drilling and great walking! The first spot we tried for an hour with no bites so we tried a mid-lake flat next.At the third hole I tried ,I got a solid take on a jigging right and landed a 3.5 pound laker ...roughly 24 inches. We tried this spot for another hour wit( no luck.
Our last spot was also a flat area about 45 feet deep. In the last 15 minutes I hooked another trout but my reel broke right at the line pickup. I hand bombed this one in and after a little excitement at the hole we got it topside. This trout was a little bigger and a couple inches longer.
We had some of the trout for supper and it was delicious. We’ve been eating steelhead this winter and the laker was a pleasant change. Not greasy or oily with a real mild flavour and good colour. Here’s some pics
