Got out Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m. and headed to Algonquin Park . With the sun in our eyes I had a close call hitting a deer near the Park boundary. I don’t think I missed it by more than 2 feet as it stopped just in time. We started fishing at 8:00 a.m. and I hooked a 10 inch trout on the second cast. I caught another trout slightly bigger shortly after and then it went quiet. We tried all the usual spoons but couldn’t get bit. As we approached a narrows I was reeling in my trolled line to get through the shallow spot ,I saw a nice trout was following but got spooked by the canoe. I quickly threw the spoon back ,jigged it twice and fish on! It was a little over 18 inches so we put it on the stringer. We tried another back bay with no success and as we were coming through the same narrows from the opposite direction my son asked if this was where I got my last fish. I said it was and threw my lure in to start trolling but immediately got a strike. The fish came towards the canoe and went crazy when it got near the boat with water flying everywhere. My son netted it but the fish somehow jumped out of the net and landed in the middle of the boat between us. What luck!This fish was a twin to the other fish. After another half hour we decided to head out as we had some jobs to do around the cottage in the afternoon.When we got back I decided to weigh the trout and they were both 2.3 pounds. A great day and all fish were still caught in shallow water less than 6 feet deep.

We usually throw egb’s,cleos or Len Thompson spoons. Sometimes, since I’m the paddler and my son casts to shore, I’ll troll a rapala or other floating body bait . That way when we stop to retrieve a snagged lure the rapala will just float to the surface until we move on. My son is a great caster now so it’s not a problem anymore but when he was 7 or 8 years old we would be trying to get lures unstuck 10 feet up in a tree or 20 feet onshore. I don’t miss those days.😄
