Went out a little later than normal at 6:30 in the morning. I was hoping to find some salmon so we went out to 85-120 for and got bumped around a whole lot for a couple of hours running lures around 40-60 and dragging the bottom for a possible lake trout. After a few hours of no results, I downsized a cheater on one rod and put one up high around 20 feet of water to try and catch some rainbows. Ended up landing one nice rainbow, having 2 bump offs and one big herring on a tiny cheater spoon. I got an even bigger sunburn but had a blast doing so! Ended up coming in around 2 pm. Still, no salmon to be found for me but I feel a lot more confident than I did last season ( my first summer fishing ).

Cooked the herring whole, stuffed him with lemons, white onion, tarragon, and some salt. Wrapped him up in some foil and put him on the grill. Was our first time eating one and they tasted a lot better than I thought they would, I would definitely eat another one!

Looks like a great dinner to me. Congrats on giving it a shot.
It seems to have paid off.

I got my first downrigger last year at the beginning of June and probably went out 3 days a week all through June and July. I only managed to catch a few lakers till about August 3rd after about 25 trips out when I finally got into some Salmon. Taking what I learned last year and trying to see if I can produce some earlier this year. I will never be disappointed with a big bow and some other fish! Even a day with no fish out with my son on the water is a win in my book!

Well done Jamie

You certainly had better luck than I did.

I'm hoping to get out Thursday, but right now winds look too strong. We shall see.

I hope the weather holds out for you Ralph if my job goes well tomorrow Thursday looks like a good possibility for me too. I am debating to either go way west past the shoals or way east near woodland beach in my hunt for salmon. Trying to get out as much as work permits to see what I can figure out.

Nice outing, Jamie!
I would say herring is the best when smoked but everyone has different preferences...
Yes, we got some confidence regardless if we get some fish or not. For example, we went to LO today for 5 hours without ant bites. I still think that I do things much better than the last year.
Keep it up,. Jamie!
Thanks for your report.
