I went fishing today despite the chance of inclement weather. It started out a bit windy, with the wind keeping it very cool (ok, 19 C). My main purpose was to test out some of the fixes I just made to my boat (bilge pump stuck and draining battery, wheel bearings on trailer, cut in transducer cable, constant blowing of fuses so no power at the console). Almost everything worked, except for the power issue.

I started at 7 am and hit my usual spots. Absolutely no luck with lures for the first hour. I throw a worm harness and landed my first and only walleye of the day on the first cast (slot size, so back he goes). He didn't fight like a walter, more like a pike, and I have the cuts to prove it.

Moved to spot number two, where I was having lots of follows. After about 30 minutes, not a nibble, so move to the next spot.

I started with various tubes, in white, green pumpkin, and yellow, no takers. Moved to swim jigs, still nothing. OK, let's pull out the worm harness again. Second cast, smallie goes airborne. He did a jig, and that was all she wrote. I'll come back to this in a minute. Started getting lots of perch where there were bluegills two days prior. Little guys, but they help to pass the time. Tried some crankbaits and chatterbaits, no luck. Moved around a bit, and then it heated up with no wind. Took a short break, and dropped a worm harness about twenty feet away. Only a green one, no other colours worked. Reached for a piece of fruit, and then had to grab my rod, another smallie. He danced and went airborne three times, and came off. Weird, I don't normally lose fish like this. I quickly grabbed another worm, and threw back out there, hoping for another family member. Five minutes later, another one hits, does a quick pirouette in the air, and off she goes too. Now I now I missed something, besides the fish. I check my hooks, and they are bent wide open. Toss that one aside, and thread a new worm. A few casts later, finally got one in the boat.

Overall, two fish landed, three fish lost, and then went home to check on the issue with my bilge pump. I'm no mechanic, but I did find some foam stuck under the float. I took it out, and hopefully now I'm good to go.

The lesson for the day is always check your hooks after a bite. I usually do, but the mind went blank today.
