CLAYTON, N.Y. — His home waters were off-limits this week, but that didn’t stop Canadian standout Chris Johnston from winning the SiteOne Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River with a whopping four-day total of 20 smallmouth bass that weighed 97 pounds, 8 ounces.

Congrats to Chris. I've fished the Clayton area a few times, and it's a real smallmouth factory! I haven't ventured out into Lake O from there (my boat isn't built for big water), but the river there is so productive. Canada representing!!

It was a fun one to watch and especially the last day fishing in very rough conditions. The anglers did an amazing job catching and landing fish. It's great to see one of the brothers win a Bassmaster event and especially on the river. Hopefully one of the brothers can do it again before the end of the season.

Apparently there were several large chum trails in various areas of the lake...
Congrats to Chris, he really held to his pattern and all his hard work over the many years he's been fishing has paid off. Those who know him and his brother often attest to their work ethic, being on the water and off the water before and long after everyone else.
Kudos to him, and I wish him much more success in the future.
