Good Day
I have been fishing balsam lake almost every weekend and fishing has been slow for me. Walleye fishing was ok with minnows until mid june. I want to try worm harnesses but looking for some advise as to depths, location etc, i have never used a harness and hear they work well. I understand the rigging and to fish them slow about 1 mile per hour i believe. Some help would be greatly appreciated ( I fish Rosedale side of the lake mostly).

Worm harnesses seem to be the best lure choice on Balsam this year. I don't usually troll, just pick a spot and toss out my line. Slow retrieve seems to do the most damage. 10-15 FOW is where it is most effective. If there is a bass or pike on the area, they will inhale it almost as soon as it hits the water, so hang on. I only use half a crawler, to try and keep the perch and sunfish off it, though not with much success.

Thats good news thanks for the advise i will try it soon, i plan on using a bottom bouncer weight with the harness to try and keep it out of the many rocks.

your mention of worm harness and Rosedale brought back many memories. My father's favorite lure was the worm harness and he used it extensively on Balsam Lake in the late fifties and sixties. The area that you're fishing on Balsam was his favorite as well. He even caught a muskie about 16 pounds on the harness at Balsam. He always used the red ruby bead harness with a small weight in front and casting it all the time. Yes, he caught lots of pickerel (walleye) with it. Thanks for taking me back to memory lane.

Well no Walleye yet on the harness. The water is still 25 to 26 deg C. Caught several perch and a 4lb pike on Saturday. I believe things will improve as the water cools but i keep trying every weekend. We did fairly good in the spring until water warmed on minnows. The Bass fishing has been the slowest i have seen. Such a nice summer so i am sure the boat traffic never helps the situation. Good luck

The last couple of weeks have been tough fishing on Balsam. No follows, no sign of anything other than perch. However, I did land a walleye on my last cast on Balsam. Not much of a fight this time, but just under slot size. It took about 5 seconds once it hit the bottom. I must have been in the wrong spot for six hours prior. At least the weather was nice.

Don’t be afraid to run the deeper muddy basins..
Find the food source (Perch) and the walleye and Muskie
will be close by. I like trolling 1.2 mph usually when
I’m running my harnesses. 👍
