Hi everyone. I just bought a cottage on Lake of Bays not far from Baysville (yay!). I will be moving my boat over from Lake Simcoe. My cottage has wide lake views just out of the narrows on the approach to Baysville with deep water off a rocky shoreline. Does anyone out there know of any resources to help me figure out fishing on a new lake like this? Not sure what to expect as my area in particular does not seem to be prime bass-type terrain. And, more importantly, in what part of the lake generally will I find the lakers?!?! Also, are there any walleye, rainbow trout or brook trout there? Not much info on the inter webs! Any insight would be really appreciated!

After making my post, I did what I should have done before making it - I searched Lake of Bays and found a number of other posts dealing with generally similar topics. That said, if anyone wants to fire off any of their own information, I would certainly appreciate it!

If you are looking for a detailed depth map of lake of bays you can purchase a Jeff’s Map version in Dorset at the Bigwin Museum on the south side of the town dock. The boat is not sailing this year so I’m not sure of their hours. I was in town and picked one up and it’s awesome.

I don’t believe Lake of Bays has rainbow or walleye but lots of smallmouth bass ,Lakers and whitefish as well as some huge pike. It’s a Great Lake and it would take a lifetime to fish it all. Good luck you are one lucky dude!

Thanks, I'll definitely look into getting one of those maps! I am lucky indeed. And now very, very broke...

I am really curious as to how this will compare to fishing on Lake Simcoe.

Depends how well you do on Simcoe. I've had some incredible days on LOB and some where I didnt mark a thing. Mind you I haven't fished it much but its fun once you find them. You are at a good start pointing.

Yeah, you'll do fine if you spend a little time on the water.
No walleye or rainbow(Oxtongue river stocked with bows I believe, so perhaps some near Dwight)
Some brookies, mostly lakers smallies whities.
Lakers all over the place. Whitefish can be tough to find, smallies, deeper than you think.
Rocky points 15-25 feet deep.
Enjoy

That's interesting Drew. It's 12' right off my dock and presumably gets deep, quickly. Typical Muskoka rocky shoreline. Hopefully I'll find me some bass!

Third week of October last fall, and probably just a 'stone's throw' from where your cottage is.

The shield lake bass have spring, summer and fall locations.....if you look for them in the fall, you will find them in 18-40 fow

just go fish, find and learn all the structure humps you can

Have now taken possession of our cottage and caught my first fish off the dock tonight as it was getting dark. Three pound smallie, top water action! What a rush!

Nice fish! I'll be up in Baysville for a week starting this weekend, and fishing from the Narrows out to Bigwin Island and up to Bona Vista.
