New to trolling for lake trout, What lure you recomend & what works 4 u?

Hi,

I'm new to trolling for lake trout and i need tips for ppl who troll for lake trout.
I don't have a down rigger but i setup a poor mans downrigger.

If you troll for lake trout. I would like to know what lures works for you?

I've seen deep diver jerk bait, wedding ring setup, night crawler setup, spoon.

I use spoons for lakers. Little cleos, Williams wabler, kamlooper, pixies. You can tip with a minnow too if fishing is slow.

X2 Williams wabler spoon. Has always worked. I never needed to try another lure.

Little Cleo in blue and silver is my go to.

Williams Wobbler works good but I find you need to slow it down a touch for the WW.

I prefer a very light flutter spoon and a mentioned, blue and silver seems to work well

On overcast days, I will switch to a copper color

Williams whitefish or wabler hammered finish silver gold or 1/2 and 1/2
Suspending 3-4 inch minnow baits

I've been reading blogs and forums on Williams Wobbler. It seems like the silver and gold is the #1 selected pattern.

WW sometimes Silver is on fire Bronze is getting skunked then vis versa.

I also have the half half but IMO it's never done as well as a WW solid bronze or silver.

I also carry various sizes because sometimes just going to a smaller sizes can turn on the bite.

My trolling lake trout is next week. I got some WW silver/blue and silver/gold and also bough some mepps spinner to try.

Since I'm not familiar with the 4 lakes im going to.

Should my leader be in between 15lbs to 20lbs or just start with 20lbs?

Honestly, leader depends on where your fishing. I pretty much do all my laker fishing in Algonquin and never really go heavier than 10 lb. But thats Algonquin. If I'm doing lake o, I would definitely bump it up to 20. All in all, I find lakers pretty aggressive eaters and never really noticed them to be line shy. You put a ww in front of their face, their gonna eat it.

THis is first time and I'm prepared to fail on the first day.

I will only use these 2 spoons and 1 swim bait.
I can try to troll with the swim bait or jig it.

Try a brief stop, spoon drops and then speed up or zig zag with the boat. Gives extra action to the lures. Sometimes they'll hit it on the drop or even when letting out line. If the fish are on that is.
