I'm curious to know if it will hurt a battery if you trickle charge them in a cold (unheated) environment.
I live in a condo but have access to an unheated garage where I could connect my 3 batteries to trickle chargers.
Will keeping them in a unheated garage over the winter hooked up to trickle chargers hurt or damage them?
They are new so I don't want to damage them.

Thanks,

I also have 3 new batteries. The battery store where I bought the batteries told be that I could leave the batteries in the boat and put smart chargers on them, which I have a 2 bank charger that is smart charger, and I have a small trickle charger that is also a smart charger. The boat dealership told me to full charge the batteries and disconnect the ground cable, would be good for winter, that is what they do. I did the disconnect last year, which did seem to be good.

My boat stays outside all winter, just tarped up.

Exactly what the 2 above said, I've had batteries last up to 11 years, must be doing something right.

I'm finishing up my 4th year with these 3 Interstate batteries. I've taken the cranking battery into the basement and left both deep cycle batteries in the boat in my driveway all winter. Cranking is on a trickle charger, and the others are plugged into the boat's 2-bank charger. No issues with any of them so far.

My boat has a shut off on the starting battery which I recommend to anyone that doesn’t have one, eliminates the possibility of leaving your fish finder on, or worse hitting the power trim or pump switches without knowing it and doing damage. That said I still plan on just topping it up with the trickle charger every month, same with my deep cycle batteries, stored in an unheated garage. If a fully charged battery is stored in the cold it’s fine, if it’s low or dead stored in the cold you can do permanent damage and should replace the battery. Some batteries don’t recommend charging or discharging below a certain temperature too though. So if I’d drained a battery I would bring it inside for charging before putting it back out in the cold to make sure it’s fully charged.

Thanks guys. Those responses tell me I'll be fine storing fully charged batteries outside in the unheated garage.
Makes it a lot easier if you've downsized to a condo.

Cheers,
