I'm thinking of making one last trip this season and Erie is on my list to consider. Since I've only done one day's fishing out of Buffalo 2 years ago, I know absolutely nothing about this lake.
Are there areas of Lake Erie that are better smallmouth waters as opposed to say walleyes or salmon? The area that I'm looking at right now is to launch from the Port Dover area down to the Long Point area, primarily because I'd be staying at a friend's place who lives in Port Dover.
I'm not asking for specific locations, just a general area to start the search. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve been waiting to get out and do some smallmouth fishing this fall on Erie but the winds are not in my favour . Look for rock to sand transitions and the bass should be close. Would think there starting to school up in areas about now. Hopefully October/November winds calm down

For Launch, try Longpoint Provincial Park, then you can fish in the relative safety of Longpoint Bay, if weather is favourable run out to the main lake, Turkey point area. I have never tried out of Port Dover, but I heard its good for perch. Not sure about Smallies in that area.

Thank you gentlemen. I hadn't even thought about the provincial park so that's another option. I was looking at Port Dover Marina or Hoover's Marina in Nanticoke. I like the idea of the "sheltered" area around Long Point. I still don't have a concrete date, but it's looking like Oct 23-25 for my little trip. I've heard so much about Erie's smallies that I decided I just had to give them one try before the end of the season.

I just got some pics from my buddy. They were from two of his employees who went to Erie near Ft. Erie last Sat. 5 fish bag they estimated to be a little over 30lb!!

If the wind forecast holds up, I'll be there on Friday afternoon for 3 nights.

Yesterday was just too windy to get out. I went to the ramp and saw 1.5 to 2 foot waves, so the boat stayed on the trailer. I almost launched in the Niagara River to escape the wind, but I didn't know anything about the river or its dangerous spots.
Got out today. Beautiful weather, very little wind and it showed at the ramp. Yesterday there were 2 boat trailers parked there. When I got there this morning before sunrise, the parking lot was totally full of boat trailers. Based on the size of the lot and the number of trucks/trailers parked on the roads around the ramp, I would guess there were 100 boats launched just there this morning.
I managed 12 smallies. All of them came from 18-30 feet. The attached pic was my biggest....4.66lb. One of my buddies from Markham showed up here this morning and they caught a tournament bag of 27.5lb, including a 7lb10oz brute from 25 FOW.
I'm liking Lake Erie!! This could be one of my fishing vacations next year!!!
