My daughter and I played hooky on Friday and decided to go steelheading . She has never been before but has always wanted to go with me. Other years she has been too busy with sports and school commitments but everything is cancelled or on hold with COVID restrictions so I jumped on the chance to take her along.
I didn’t have any spawn tied and I usually don’t fish this early in the year so we thought we would throw spoons and see what happened. It was gorgeous weather with 12 degree temps but there was a stiff wind.
I landed the first fish around 4 pounds which we kept and she landed an eight pound steelhead that we released as it was a hen full of eggs.
We released another big hen and kept another four pound fish for supper.
She did end up hooking a hard fighting steelhead that broke her off due to a little over excitement. She was really proud to have hooked her first steelhead though.
We quit after about four hours of fishing and headed home.
