Interesting read on the recommendations for walleye slot size for 2021. I am all for a change to a smaller slot size that would protect the larger spawning females. These smaller fish are the best eating and we are looking forward to a few more fish fries. This year we are going to track the size of all fish we catch and see how many fish will be in the new recommended slot size for 2021. The approved recommendation was to change the slot size for 2021 to a narrow fishable slot for walleye of 400 mm (15.748 inches) to 450 mm (17.165 inches”).

That's quite a narrow slot but it's way better than what it is now. Never understood the encouragement of keeping the breeding stock.

This makes more sense. My experience is a lot of fish are in the 16-17.5" range now.

Too many people going up and catching so many within this new recommended slot size and having to throw them back the past couple of years, this would sure help people keep a couple for a little taste if it were to go into effect. Personally I would like to see the two fish limit maintained but I would like to see 1 fish between 40cm to 46cm and 1 fish over 46cm or 2 fish in the 40cm to 46cm slot size for sports licence and maybe 1 between 40cm to 46cm for a conservation licence. If people can't get a little fish fry in while they are up there it is going to start hurting the operators as people will look to go elsewhere.

Not to be ignored but this new slot limit would help bring more tourist to the outfitters. Hopefully they would be fully booked....summer and winter.

Is anyone aware of any changes for the Lake Nipissing walleye slot going ahead this Jan 21?

The regulations are usually updated around the middle of December. We won't know much till then.

There will NOT be a change to the fishing regulations on Lake Nipissing in 2021. Because of the Covid-19 restrictions the necessary public consultation could not take place so the earliest a change could take place is 2022. So for the 2021 ice fishing season the Walleye minimum size limit is 46cm with a daily possession limit is 2 fish.

My trips from southern ontario to Nipi for the last 21 years has never been about eating fish or shore lunches. Its always been about the sport of catching and the cameradery of folks company, family and friends, whilst doing so. Dont get me wrong, over the years we have had dozens of fish fries, but almost everytime its Pike. I never really understood the menatlity of folk not wanting to come to Nippissing because they could not take a couple of Walleye for eating. If you are willing to pay the cost of the trip north then buy a couple of fillets on the way or try Pike. Once you get the hang of fileting it theres plenty for all and I dare you to tell the difference. . Just got back after spending a week on the lake, fishing was tough, all together maybe 30 walleye, no keepers, and 7 pike, all small returned except one 7.5 lb, kept to eat.

I agree this is nonsense. I am sure when they enacted this slot limit they didn't ask the public's opinion, they based it on their studies of the fishery and rightly so (science)

If the MNRF has no intentions to change the Regs this year due to Covid 19, then why were they out on Lake Nipissing netting fish recently at tax payers expense, endangering the public and possibly damaging some fish stocks with those nets when they have no intention to revisit or entertain changes to the slot limit Regs?
