Will be interesting to here your report tomorrow if you find another hole like that.. Is gill netting even allowed unless your first nation folk??
Very illegal! I hope it wasn’t made for gill netting. But after watching a few videos on how it is done. It can be done easily with other fishermen around without noticing as huts will give cover. Only reason I bought it up was the hole that size for portable huts does not make sense.

it's probably as simple as some guy got a new chainsaw and thought he'd try it out. maybe as innocent as a hole to sink a bait bucket in...just ignorant

I highly doubt the people were " Gill Netting" under the ice, it's not as easy as you may think. It takes some specialized equipment from the nets themselves to the large creepers used to spread the nets out under the ice, it's a lot of work and would not go unnoticed by others fishing on the ice. It's not something that you could hide from public view, you have to follow the creeper as it pulls a rope under the ice and then attach and set the net. It's a lot of work to set a net for fish under the ice.
What we have here is perhaps some uneducated or ignorant persons that should be educated in the risks and danger of leaving unmarked holes in the lake. It seems to happen a lot unfortunately weather it's just laziness or ignorance, people need to be more aware of the dangers to others they are leaving behind after a day on the ice.

Actually it wouldn't be that hard to hide it if they wanted to do this...check out the videos on YouTube.. Not as hard as you think to conceal everything.. Probably another reason for it, like said maybe just testing a chain saw..

Wanted to hit a new lake today but the thought of someone hurting themselves in that hole drove me nuts so had to do something about it. Checked around for another hole that size in the vicinity and didn't find any.
